THE CLASSIC FILM MUSIC OF JOHN BARRY: VOLUME 1
Rating:

Original Review: If ever you've had a hard day at the office, or wherever you work, and want something to unwind to, The Classic Film Music of John Barry Volume 1 is perfect. Encompassing almost thirty years of film music scores of the highest order, Silva's compilation offers a marvellous set of themes to relax to. Although I myself have been guilty in the past of criticising John Barry for unoriginality, even I cannot deny that the lush, golden, flowing melodies that Barry employs in many of his scores are absolutely beautiful. All his best are included here, including the Oscar-winners 'Out of Africa', 'Born Free', 'Dances With Wolves' and 'The Lion in Winter', as well as 'Chaplin' and 'Somewhere In Time'. The theme from 'Hanover Street', which was a notoriously bad film, is an absolute gem, as is the sad and yearning piano theme from 'Indecent Proposal', and the sexy and sultry saxophone ballad from 'Body Heat'. In fact, the whole album is virtual perfection: a masterclass in melody and harmony, and ideal music for lazy summer evenings.
