Terence Blanchard
Born: 13 March 1962, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Biography:
American jazz trumpeter and composer of international standing. Encouraged by his musically inclined father, Joseph Oliver, Blanchard began learning the piano at the age of five, and attended the New Orleans Centre for Creative Arts, where he honed his musical skills under the tutelage of Art Blakey, and emerged as a highly respected jazz trumpeter. He burst onto the New York jazz scene in the 1980s, along with contemporaries such as Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and quickly built a reputation as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians and bandleaders of his generation. Blanchard became involved in movies during the late 1980s, playing trumpet on soundtracks for his friend and contemporary Spike Lee. He scored his first solo movie in 1990, for Lee's "Mo' Better Blues", and has since written music for each of Lee's subsequent films, including "Jungle Fever" (1991, in collaboration with Stevie Wonder) "Malcolm X" (1992), "Crooklyn" (1994) "Clockers" (1995), "Summer of Sam" (1999), "Bamboozled" (2000), "25th Hour" (2002, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination) and “Inside Man” (2006). Other prominent works by Blanchard include "Sugar Hill" (1994), "Eve's Bayou" (1997), "Next Friday" (2000), "Love & Basketball" (2000), "Original Sin" (2001), "The Caveman's Valentine" (2001) and "Barbershop" (2002). Blanchard continues to be active in the jazz and blues scene, owning an exclusive recording contract with Sony, and having recently worked with artists such as Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson. He also works to further jazz education, having recently accepted an appointment to the University of Southern California (USC) as the Artistic Director for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance.
