Bruce Broughton
Born: 8 March 1945, Los Angeles, California.
Biography:
American composer Bruce Broughton enjoyed an incredibly prolific career writing music for a television during the 1970s and 80s, having worked on such hit series as "Gunsmoke", "Hawaii Five-O", "Barnaby Jones", "Quincy", "Logan's Run", "Dallas", "Hart to Hart" and "Buck Rogers". His wrote his debut theatrical feature score in 1983, for James Collier's "The Prodigal", and has since gone on to be one of the most well-respected - if criminally under-utilized - composers of orchestral film music working today. His third feature, the popular western "Silverado" (1985) was rewarded with an Oscar nomination, and since then his career has been characterized by excellent scores, usually with rousing bombastic themes, which often accompany westerns, or films which celebrate the American pioneer spirit. Scores of note include "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987), "The Presidio" (1988), "The Rescuers Down Under" (1990), "Betsy's Wedding" (1990), "Narrow Margin" (1990), "Honey, I Blew Up the Kid" (1992), "Tombstone" (1993), "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" (1993), "Miracle on 34th Street" (1994), "Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco" (1996), and "Lost in Space" (1998), his most successful film to date. Recently, Broughton's musical output in terms of feature films has slowed to a virtual crawl - he hasn't scored a theatrically released movie since 1998 – but he has been keeping busy, working regularly on films for the Hallmark cable channel, overseeing the musical side of Warner Bros. animation department, and acting as a Member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences music branch. In recent years, the annual Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special has become something of a Broughton exclusive, as he has won the award for three straight years – for "Eloise at the Plaza" in 2003, "Eloise at Christmastime" in 2004, and "Warm Springs" in 2005.
