CINEMA DU MONDE

Original Review: Cinema Du Monde is a compilation of the great classical themes from European Cinema in the last fifteen or so years, from composers like Jean Claude Petit, Philippe Sarde, Bjorn Isfalt and Maurice Jarre. It begins with Jarre's Carpe Diem cue from Dead Poets's Society, played on flute and harp: however, I think that the album producers have chosen the wrong cue to present this cue, as the End Credits rendition has a much higher emotional content. However, Jarre's heartfelt arrangement of The Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody is gorgeous. The other highlight cues, for me, are Jean-Claude Petit's legendary score from Jean de Florette; the lovely, romantic piano/oboe cue from Klara, by Karl Ernst Sasse; Jurgen Knieper's epic, lavish flute theme from Apres La Guerre; Philippe Sarde's delicate cello theme from Fort Saganne; Bjorn Isfalt's comedic muted brass theme from My Life as a Dog, which is an amusing diversion; Jarre's Orientally-influenced synthesiser cue from The Year of Living Dangerously; the music from Pelle the Conqueror, by Stefan Nilsson, which begins with a gentle, delicate piano and violin theme but then incorporates an oboe into the melody; a contemporary romantic theme by Nicola Piovani for the film Le Grand Chemin, with a upbeat underscore to a synthesised flute melody; and the tango-like piano theme from Benvenuta, by Frederic Devreese. Overall a very good musical journey through the upper echelons of European cinema. Oh, and I must say thanks to Clare Molyneux for helping me get hold of this album.
