THE DEVIL'S OWN
Rating:

Original Review: Okay, so, I admit it. The Devil's Own is beginning to grow on me. I hope you will excuse me for re-reviewing this CD, but I thought it was really necessary considering the increased liking I have for this score. In my original review, I said that "I never thought I would say it about a Horner score, but this is a bit of a disappointment". And indeed it was, but since then I have found myself loving the lyrical Main Title with its Uillean pipes, dreamy strings and gorgeous vocal work by Sara Clancy singing in Gaelic. I also like 'The New World', a classic Horner piece with one of those stirring string-and-brass melodies he comes up with so well; and 'The Pool Hall', which starts off slowly but then turns into a lively jig played at full kilter with pipes and flutes. There are also a couple of good action cues, and a couple of quiet and introspective themes, but I still can't bring myself to like the song performed by Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. I normally like their stuff ('Zombie' was great) but Irish Rock and James Horner doesn't quite mix well. Ah well, never mind. Like I said, this is growing on me by the day.
