David Newman
Born: 11 March 1954, Los Angeles, California.
Biography:
As the eldest son of Alfred Newman (making him the brother of Thomas, the cousin of Randy and the nephew of Lionel and Emil), David Louis Newman was born into a legendary film music family. An accomplished violinist, and successful concert conductor, Newman was educated at the University of Southern California, and following the completion of his studies, he began his career in 1974 as a studio musician. Almost inevitably, Newman went into the family composing business a decade later, contributing music to Tim Burton's classic animated short "Frankenweenie" in 1984, and scoring his first features - Roger Corman's "Vendetta" and the low-budget horror classic "Critters" - the following year. Since then, Newman has notched up a large list of credits, containing a number of highly successful movies, most significantly in the high-concept comedy genre. Among his most popular credits are films such as "The War of the Roses" (1989), "The Flintstones" (1994), "The Nutty Professor" (1996), "Galaxy Quest" (1999), "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" (2000), "102 Dalmatians" (2000), "Dr. Dolittle 2" (2001), "Ice Age" (2002), "Scooby-Doo" (2002) and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (2003). Newman received his first (and, to date, only) Oscar nomination in 1997, for his work on the Fox animated fairytale "Anastasia". Also in 1997, Newman also began a four year stint as the music director for the Sundance Institute, and in 2007 he was elected President of the Film Music Society. Newman is married, to Krystyna, who often works as her husband’s “scoring consultant”; together, they have one child, and reside in Malibu, California.
