Pino Donaggio
Born: 24 October 1941, Burano, Italy.
Biography:
Giuseppe "Pino" Donaggio was born in the small village of Burano near Venice, Italy in 1941. A prodigious childhood talent, he began playing violin at the age of ten, studied at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice and the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, and was performing recitals at the age of 14. Then, in 1959, Donaggio discovered rock and roll, and switched from the classical world to this new and exciting genre. Donaggio had almost immediate success as a songwriter in Italy in the 1960s, touring with Paul Anka, and writing the song "Io Che Non Vivo", which sold 60 million records worldwide when it was translated into English as "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and covered by both Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield. Donaggio made his film music debut in 1973, writing the score for Nicolas Roeg's classic thriller "Don't Look Now". Since then, Donaggio has become a critically popular, if slightly obscure, member of the Italian film music circle, who enjoyed a successful stint in Hollywood in the early 1980s through his collaborations with Brian De Palma and Joe Dante, but is now a largely undiscovered figure as a result of his decision to move the focus of his work back to his native country in the mid 1980s. Some of Donaggio's more famous international works include "Carrie" (1976), "Piranha" (1978), "Home Movies" (1979), "Dressed to Kill" (1980), "Blow Out" (1981), "The Howling" (1981), "Body Double" (1984), "Raising Cain" (1992), "Never Talk to Strangers" (1995), "Up at the Villa" (1998), and the recent "Seed of Chucky" (2004), while in Italy he has remained prolific, having worked on films by such diverse filmmakers as Liliana Cavani, Mario Girotti, Massimo Troisi, Roberto Benigni, and Tinto Brass. Donaggio lives with his wife in Venice, and is the father of two daughters.
