The true story of the ill-fated relationship between author T. S. Elliot (Willem Dafoe), and socialite Vivian Haigh-Wood (Miranda Richardson). Set in early Victorian England, it chronicles the whirlwind courtship of the handsome American student and the beautiful woman who hides a dark secret - she has a hormonal imbalance which causes violent mood swings, and problem which is only heightened by the inappropriate medication of alcohol and morphine she is prescribed.
