Randy Edelman
Born: 10 June 1947, Paterson, New Jersey.
Biography:
Composer and songwriter Randy Edelman originally trained to be a doctor, but was soon lured away from medicine by his love for music. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and first entered the public eye during the 1970s, as an arranger and songwriter for artists such as James Brown, Barry Manilow and The Carpenters. He embarked on career as a solo recording artist in his own right in 1972, enjoying international hits with the songs "Concrete and Clay" and "Uptown Uptempo Woman", and releasing several successful albums, including "The Laughter and the Tears" in 1972, "Prime Cuts" in 1974, "Farewell Fairbanks" in 1975 and "If Love Is Real" in 1977. He dabbled in the scoring scene during that time, working on small TV movies, before reaching a wider audience through his work on cult TV series "MacGyver" in the early 1980s. He wrote his first major score in 1988, sharing co-composing duties with Georges Delerue on the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy vehicle "Twins", and since then has amassed a list of credits which include hit movies such as "Ghostbusters II" (1989), "Kindergarten Cop" (1990), "Beethoven" (1992), "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992, co-composed with Trevor Jones), "The Mask" (1994), "While You Were Sleeping" (1995), "Anaconda" (1997), "Six Days Seven Nights" (1998) and "XXX" (2002), as well as popular fan-favorites such as "Gettysburg" (1993) and "Dragonheart" (1996). Edelman maintains a highly personal composing style, mixing large string orchestra with an impressive array of synthesizers. He has been nominated for both a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, was the recipient of the Richard Kirk award at the 2003 BMI Awards. He is married to actress/singer/songwriter Jackie De Shannon.
