THE ENGLISH PATIENT

GABRIEL YARED

Rating:

Original Review: This is the first Gabriel Yared soundtrack I bought: In fact, I don't think I've heard any of his work before. But, The English Patient will certainly put him on the mainstream map. Whether this score should have won the Oscar or not, I don't know. The factor that probably swayed it was Yared's unusual use of different types of music: from romantic strings to 1930s jazz, classical baroque to Hungarian folk songs and African/Arabic chanting, its all in there. My favourite cues are the opening 'The English Patient', the sublime and gentle 'Rupert Bear' and the concluding 'The Cave of Swimmers' which is a glorious, full-bodied romantic theme.
