FATHER OF THE BRIDE

ALAN SILVESTRI

Rating:

Original Review: Father of the Bride is the musical equivalent of a feelgood movie: an album which lightens your mood as soon as the first bars of the gloriously full-bodied main theme hits your ears, and never lets up with the joy-joy feelings until the same theme dies down at the end of the End Credits. Next to Forrest Gump, this is my favourite Alan Silvestri score: a combination of the wonderfully romantic main theme with bits of jazz and moody blues thrown in there as well (some of which sounds like Bruce Smeaton's main theme from that other Steve Martin movie Roxanne); a lovely oboe theme for Annie (the Bride herself), a quirky and amusing chase/comedy theme first heard in 'Snooping Around' and a fun, funky segment in 'Drive to Brunch' and 'Pool Cue'. In addition to Silvestri's score, there are also excerpts from Pachelbel Canon and the classic song 'The Way You Look Tonight' performed by Steve Tyrell. The only problem, and the things which knocks at least a star off the rating, is the ludicrously short running times of some of the cues: I mean, come on! One of 22 seconds, one of 33 seconds and two of 48? Some of the movie studio tag themes are longer than that! This aside, Father of the Bride is lovely - as I said, one of Silvestri's best.
