MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN

PATRICK DOYLE

Rating:

Original Review: The bargain bin of Roulette Records in Sheffield proved fruitful yet again, this time bearing Patrick Doyle's most thematically rich score to date. Throughout the score there is a sense of darkness and foreboding , and nowhere is this more apparent than in the main title, 'To Think of a Story', a driving brass piece with a strong drum undercurrent which contains the main dramatic theme which recurs throughout the album. 'I Won't If You Won't' provides the first glimpse of the rich, lavish romantic theme which is played in its glorious entirety during the cue 'The Wedding Night', a wonderfully sonorous string piece which complements the darker moments perfectly. 'Victor Begins' is the darkest, most dangerous-sounding cue on the album, a real dread-laden piece with a pounding percussion; then a trilogy of cues: 'Yes, I Speak', 'God Forgive Me' and 'Please Wait' are the most emotionally charged of the album: these underscore the meeting Victor and the Monster in the Ice Cave and are full of a moving ache as the Monster spills his soul to his father. The album ends with 'He Was My Father', a compilation of all the main themes to bring things to a close.
