GLORY

Original Review: I'm going to really offend all the other James Horner fans out there by saying that Glory has never quite captured my imagination to the extent that it has other people. Although it was nominated for a Golden Globe and was roundly praised by critics, I don't feel it is quite as easy to listen to as some of the other Horner scores. This isn't to say it is a bad CD; on the contrary, there are some beautiful cues: 'A Call To Arms' makes powerful use of the voices of the Boys Choir of Harlem, which can be heard throughout the score, and has a stirring violin melody. 'Forming the Regiment' is the best track on the album, starting out quietly with a single trumpet playing the main theme, and slowly bringing in all the other sections of the orchestra to perform a full, triumphant statement after a rhythmic soldier's march played on snare drums and whistles. The 'Closing Credits' again encompass all the main themes of the score with a final rendition, but I still feel that Horner has done better work. Sorry.
