Elliot Goldenthal Elliot Goldenthal

Born: 2 May 1954, New York, New York.

Biography:
Groundbreaking American composer Elliot Goldenthal attended the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where he was a student of both Aaron Copland and John Corigliano. Following a successful concert-hall and theatrical career, and a score for a low-budget 1979 drama entitled "Cocaine Cowboys", Goldenthal made his mainstream film debut in 1989 with his score for Mary Lambert's horror "Pet Sematary". Goldenthal quickly became a popular and highly respected member of the film music world and is now regarded as one of the most original, innovative and avant-garde composers working in film today. His scores tend to encompass a wide and eclectic variety of styles and instruments, ranging from classical to jazz, big band and swing, while keeping the music in the context of the film. His credits include commercial successes such as "Alien 3" (1992), "Interview With the Vampire" (1994), "Heat" (1995), "Batman Forever" (1995), "A Time to Kill" (1996), "Batman and Robin" (1997) and “SWAT” (2003), as well as the critically acclaimed "Michael Collins" (1996), "The Butcher Boy" (1997), "Titus" (1999) and "Frida", for which he won his first Academy Award in 2002. In addition to film music, Goldenthal is equally active in composing music for theatre and the concert hall; his most famous non-film works being the critically acclaimed symphonic memorial to the Vietnam war "Fire Water Paper", the carnival mass "Juan Darien", the ballet "Othello" (which was subsequently turned into a TV movie in 2003), the eclectic Broadway musical 'The Green Bird' based on the 18th century play by Carlo Gozzi, and an original opera “Grendel”, based on the classic story of Beowulf, and which debuted in 2006. He is the long-term partner of film and theatre director Julie Taymor, with whom he has professionally collaborated many times.
