Harry Gregson-Williams Harry Gregson-Williams

Born: 13 December 1961, London, England

Biography:
English-born composer Harry Gregson-Williams was an outstanding singer as a child, and toured the world as the lead boy soprano with the choir of St. John's College, Cambridge. He enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and worked as a teacher in some of the most deprived parts of Africa following his graduation, before returning to England in the late 1980s to work as an assistant orchestrator for composer Stanley Myers. His association with Myers led to him becoming professionally involved with composer Hans Zimmer, who invited him to join his Media Ventures group in 1996. Gregson-Williams worked on a number of successful films during his tenure at the Santa Monica-based studio, writing, conducting and orchestrating music for films such as “Crimson Tide” (1995, with Zimmer), “Broken Arrow” (1996, with Zimmer), “The Fan” (1996, with Zimmer), “The Rock” (1996, with Nick Glennie-Smith), “The Peacemaker” (1997, with Zimmer), “Smilla's Sense of Snow” (1997), “The Borrowers” (1997), “As Good As It Gets” (1997, with Zimmer), “The Prince of Egypt” (1998, with Zimmer), "Enemy of the State" (1998, with Trevor Rabin) and "Antz" (1998, with John Powell). He formally left Media Ventures and went out ‘on his own’ in 1999, but retains close ties with a number of former MV alumni, notably John Powell, with whom he worked on the phenomenally successful "Shrek" (2001), “Chicken Run" (2001) and "Shrek 2" (2004). He recently received his first recognition from a major awards committee, receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his score for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005). Away from the cinema, Gregson-Williams contributed memorable music to the various Metal Gear Solid series of video games, and has worked with many rock and pop artists on their commercial albums. Harry is married, to Karen Ducey, and has a brother, Rupert, who is also a composer and conductor.
