HOOK

Original Review: I shall be forever grateful to the second hand record store in Boscombe, Dorset for having this CD on their shelves when I least expected it. After reading Tom Daish's excellent review, I had been on the lookout, and I'm not disappointed. It opens with the marvellous Flying Theme with the cue 'Prologue', which is all soaring trumpets and strings and cymbal clashes. The Flying Theme reappears throughout the CD in various different tracks. 'Presenting The Hook' is another great cue, which starts with something reminiscent of a whistle hornpipe, but then changes into an amusing militaristic march. The best cue on the album, however, is without a doubt 'You Are The Pan', which starts off quietly but builds and builds into an incredible string theme with an emotional, almost spiritual feel to it (and which also reminded me of the religious pictures of the 1950s - Miklos Rozsa and Alfred Newman). 'Farewell Neverland' encompasses all the major themes to finish off the album. Special note should also go to the third cue, 'Banning Back Home', which features a jaunty piano solo by Mike Lang, and which really sounds as though it should have come from one of those 'urban comedies' of the mid-80s, like Mr Mom or Baby Boom. In addition to the score, Leslie Bricusse has written two original songs: 'We Don't Wanna Grow Up' and 'When You're Alone', both of which are sung by child choruses, the latter also being nominated for an Oscar.
