Biography:
Jeff Beal is a talented and critically acclaimed composer and jazz trumpeter who was named one of ‘20 Creatives to Watch’ by Variety Magazine in 2001.
Beal was born into a musical household – Beal's grandmother, Irene, was an accomplished pianist and professional silent-movie accompanist – and began trumpet studies in the third grade, after being inspired by artists such as Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Beal write wrote his first long-form composition for the Oakland Youth Symphony Orchestra while a high school student, and latwe went on to study composition and trumpet at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, graduating in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music degree. Beal first came to national acclaim when he the recipient of an unprecedented 11 "db" awards from Downbeat Magazine for his recordings as a jazz trumpeter, composer, and arranger, while still in school. Beal’s debut album, Liberation, was released by for Island Records, and his jazz band performed at The Blue Note and the Montreaux Jazz Festivals. At the request of Chick Corea, Beal composed and recorded a concerto for the virtuosic jazz bassist, John Patitucci, and his second album, Alternate Route, was composed for improvised trumpet and orchestra. He has also composed improvisatory concerti for Dave Samuels, Larry Coombs, and Turtle Island String Quartet. Beal scored his first movies in 1994, and received critical acclaim (and his first taste of commercial success) following his work on the Oscar-winning "Pollock" in 2000. Since then, Beal has gone on to enjoy a successful career in television, with an occasional film project thrown in; in addition to scoring hit shows such as “Carnivàle”, “Rome” and “Ugly Betty”, he won an Emmy for the main title theme he wrote for the TV comedy/drama series “Monk” in 2003, a second Emmy for the dramatic underscore to the TNT miniseries “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” Battleground episode in 2007, and a third Emmy for his score for the mini-series “The Company” in 2008. He is married to soprano singer Joan Sapiro Beal.
