JURASSIC PARK

JOHN WILLIAMS

Rating:

Original Review: Grossly overlooked by the Oscars voters in 1993, Jurassic Park is one of Williams' best scores of recent years. The 'Theme from Jurassic Park' is one of those marvellous cues which sticks in your mind, a luscious, full-orchestra extravaganza which, along with 'Journey to the Island' and 'Welcome to Jurassic Park', just sweeps you away with its splendid strings and woodwind and choral undercurrent. In a complete change of pace, 'Incident at Isla Nublar' is a disquieting, thrilling action piece, 'Raptor Attack' is a full-frontal assault on the earlobes with a throbbing brass and pizzicato string and 'My Friend, the Brachiosaurus' is, in the words of Steven Spielberg on the cover notes, a "haunting and ennobling sound". As an interesting footnote, 'Jurassic Park Gate' is an unusual variation on the main theme, this time with a calypso beat thrown in.
