THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK
Rating:

Original Review: You know, I had a feeling I wasn't going to like this score. I'd had reservations right from the start, after seeing the movie a couple of weeks ago, so I got it on cassette instead of CD and I'm glad I didn't spend the extra £5. I think the main problem is that the wonderful main theme from the original Jurassic Park is woefully under-used here. It only appears two or three times during the body of the album, and then only in short snippets, and finally gets a full airing during the closing credits sequence. The full arrangement here is very different, though: it is played with a much quicker tempo which certainly hightens the tension, but in my opinion spoils the emotional impact of the theme. Of the new sections - well, to be truthful, there aren't really many standout cues. To make a comparison with the original, most of them are much more 'The Raptor Attack' than 'Journey to the Island', and doesn't have the same sense of awe and wonder that the original did. In fact much of the music seems to have a heavy South American influence, with lots of percussion and tom-toms. Having said that, the new main theme composed for the film is good: a quick, exciting piece played with lots of bass and brass; 'The Raptors Appear' is a frightening action cue; and 'The Stegosaurus' is nice - a slow march theme played on low-toned strings. Other than that, the score is pretty nondescript, albeit with innovative orchestrations. Perhaps John Williams just decided he couldn't possibly better the first score? Oh, and by the way: Dinorama? What the hell were they thinking?
