Mark Mancina
Born: 9 March 1957, Santa Monica, California
Biography:
Born in Santa Monica, California composer Mark Mancina spent his childhood in Culver City, then Huntington Beach, and embraced music at a very early age. He has performed all his life as a singer, guitarist and pianist. After studying composition and performance as a classical guitar major at Cal State University in Fullerton, he went on to perform on Trevor Rabin's solo tour, and later to write and produce for the cult prog-rock band Yes, of whom Rabin was the lead singer. He also worked on several records with producer Trevor Horn, including the song "Crazy," performed by Grammy-winning artist Seal. In 1990, Mancina moved from Los Angeles to London for a year to work with Emerson, Lake and Palmer, producing and composing their "Black Moon" album for PolyGram. As a result of his collaboration with Horn, Mancina was asked by Hans Zimmer to arrange and co-produce the music for his films "True Romance" and "Days of Thunder", and soon became a member of Zimmer's Media Ventures scoring stable. After a few minor scoring assignments, Mancina came to prominence as a talent in his own right when he scored the smash hit action thriller "Speed" for director Jan De Bont in 1994. Throughout the 1990s, Mancina was one of Hollywood’s most successful composers, with films such as "Bad Boys" (1995), "Money Train" (1995), "Assassins" (1995), "Twister" (1996), "Con Air" (1997, with Trevor Rabin), "Speed 2: Cruise Control" (1997), "Tarzan" (1999, with Phil Collins), "Domestic Disturbance" (2001), "Training Day" (2001), “The Haunted Mansion” (2003) and “Brother Bear” (2003) to his name. Recently, Mancina has also contributed considerably to the world of episodic television, notably the hit detective series “Criminal Minds”. Mancina often works with John Van Tongeren, Don Harper and Dave Metzger on his scores, and has developed some strong relationships with directors such as Joseph Ruben, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua and the aforementioned De Bont. Away from the cinema, Mancina received critical acclaim, a Grammy nomination and an Ivor Novello Award for his reworking of the music from the movie The Lion King for the hit stage show "Lion King on Broadway".
