THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE

JAMES HORNER

Rating:

Original Review: One of James Horner's little undiscovered gems, The Man Without A Face is an introspective, thoughtful, but strangely powerful string and piano-based score which is reminiscent of Searching for Bobby Fischer and doesn't contain a bad cue. It begins with the lyrical main title, 'A Father's Legacy', which is somehow sad and optimistic at the same time. This sounds like a contradiction, I know, it's really the only way I can describe it. 'Flying' contains a beautiful string and woodwind melody which really does conjure up images of floating away on a summer breeze; 'Nightmares and Revelations' is a slightly darker variation on the Main Title theme, with low, brooding violins and basses, and 'Lookout Point/End Credits' is a great medley of all the main cues bringing the album to a close. In addition to Horner's score, the album also contains an extract from the Puccini opera "La Fanciulla Del West", performed by Jussi Björling.
