Biography:
A composer whose name is synonymous with all that is good about film music, Ennio Morricone has had a revolutionary impact on the way films are scored, especially in his most celebrated genre: the spaghetti western. Roman by birth, young Morricone studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he became an accomplished trumpeter. He began scoring movies in the early 1960s and, during the early part of his career, Morricone occasionally adopted westernized pseudonyms such as Dan Savio and Leo Nichols in an attempt to endear himself to American producers. It was while using the 'Savio' name that Morricone first received international acclaim, when a former classmate of his - fledgling director Sergio Leone - asked him to score his movie "Per Un Pugno di Dollari" in 1964. The result of their collaboration was released in the US with the title "A Fistful of Dollars”, and became one of the most legendary pieces of music ever written for a film, with its offbeat orchestrations and fresh aspect. Since that groundbreaking moment, Morricone has split his time equally between scoring films in his native Italy and in Hollywood, and now has over 500 titles to his name - probably the greatest number of credits of any film composer since the late Alfred Newman. Morricone's impact on the history of cinema is probably impossible to judge. He has worked with some of the greatest directors in cinema history, in every conceivable genre, and includes such legendary films as "The Battle of Algiers" (1965), "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" (1966), "Navajo Joe" (1966), "Guns for San Sebastian" (1968), "Once Upon A Time in the West (1968), "Two Mules for Sister Sara" (1969), "Giú La Testa" (1971), "Sacco and Vanzetti" (1971), "La Cage Aux Folles" (1978), "Days of Heaven" (1978), "Once Upon A Time in America" (1984), "The Mission" (1986), "The Untouchables" (1987), "Cinema Paradiso" (1988), "Bugsy" (1991), "Wolf" (1994), "The Legend of 1900" (1998), and "Maléna" (2000) among his list of credits. Many of these featured the soaring soprano vocal work of Edda dell’Orso, whose voice has become a familiar aspect of Morricone’s greatest scores. He has been Oscar nominated five times, and was awarded an honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema in 2006, and despite now being almost 80 years of age, shows no signs of slowing down his work rate: in both 2002 and 2005, he wrote music for seven different films across Europe – although even this doesn’t come close to the FIFTEEN he wrote in 1965! Morricone's son, Andrea, is also a composer.
