Nicola Piovani Nicola Piovani

Born: 26 May 1946, Rome, Italy.

Biography:
Italian composer and arranger Nicola Piovani began learning the piano at the age of nine, and received a music degree from the Verdi Conservatory in Milan in 1967. Shortly after obtaining his diploma, he began working with actor and singer-songwriter Duilio Del Prete, and later worked with the singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André, with whom he collaborated on two of his albums, “Non all'amore non al denaro né al cielo” and “Storie d'un impiegato”. In the late 1960s, Piovani also entertained his love for jazz, performing in alternative clubs, accompanying singers, and writing music for stage shows for artists such as puppeteer Otello Sarzi. He also began writing music for documentaries in Italy at this time, having received inspiration and instruction in orchestration fromGreek composer Manos Hadjidakis. Piovani scored his first dramatic film in 1970, and his early work in Italy included titles such as "Il Profumo Della Signora In Nero (1973)", "Flavia the Heretic" (1974), "La Notte di San Lorenzo" (1982), "Chaos" (1984) and "Il Camorrista" (1985). After the death of Nino Rota, Piovani became director Federico Fellini's composer-of-choice, working with the great man on "Ginger and Fred" (1986), "Intervista" (1987) and "The Voice of the Moon" (1990), which subsequently raised his international profile. Since then, his international successes have included "Dear Diary" (1994), "La Stanza Del Figlio" (2001), "Pinocchio" (2002), and the Oscar-wining "Life is Beautiful" (1997) for the irrepressible director Roberto Benigni. In addition to his film work, Piovani maintains a strong musical relationship with the theatre, having recently written the musical comedy I sette re di Roma by Luigi Magni and featuring Gigi Proietti, and travelled with the theatrical show Stabat Mater with Vincenzo Cerami to venues in Bethlehem and Rome. Somewhat oddly, prior to his Oscar success in 1997, certain biographies stated that Piovani was not a real person, and was in fact a pseudonym used by Ennio Morricone!
