ALAN MENKEN

Rating:

Original Review: A comparative flop by Disney standards, despite winning an Oscar in 1994. The songs themselves are on the whole good, but a little uninspired, with the obvious exceptions being 'Just Around The Riverbend' and the absolutely spellbinding 'Colours of the Wind', which is one of those spine-tingling, emotional songs that Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz can come up with, both of which are beautifully sung by Judy Kuhn. Mel Gibson even lends his vocal talent to one track ('Mine, Mine, Mine'), but keeps the singing to an absolute minimum. As far as the score goes, there are a few highlight tracks, like 'Ship at Sea' which is an exciting action cue, and the final two on the album: 'Execution' and 'Farewell', which contain the orchestral underscore from 'Colours of the Wind', but the rest is mainly filler music. Overall disappointing, despite its' highlights.
