REGARDING HENRY
Rating:

Original Review: This is one of Hans Zimmer's less well-known music scores, and is quite far removed from his popular action favourites Crimson Tide, The Rock and Backdraft. The film is about a businessman who suffers a head injury and has to learn to do everything again, right from childhood. The beautiful, subdued, introspective, mainly synthesised score begins with the main title, 'Walkin' Talkin' Man' an optimistic, upbeat, catchy piano and woodwind theme with a soft rock beat and which features the unusual voice of Bobby McFerrin, who had a world-wide hit a few years back with 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'. In an album full of highlights, the best cues are 'A Cold Day in New York', which is a much slower, slightly mournful sax piece with unusual synth effects to conjure up images of lonely, desolate streets; 'Blowfish', which is a lovely romantic melody that could have been the music for a pop ballad; 'I Don't Like Eggs' is a gorgeous theme, slightly tinged with a kind of longing sadness; and the final two, 'Central Park, 6pm' and 'Buddy Grooves' are, I think, the best tracks on the album - an amazing combination of Zimmer's smooth-sounding synths, Bruce Fowler's piano and a wonderful full-string orchestra playing the bouncy main theme, with Bobby McFerrin's beepbox voice in the background. For anyone listening to this score, it will come as a surprise to many that the man forever cursed as being the composer who killed off the decent action score for good wrote this. Perhaps the Hans Zimmer has talent after all. He's just gone up ten points in my book, and Regarding Henry has just been installed as my favourite score by the German maestro.
