Thomas Newman
Biography: 20 October 1955, Los Angeles, California.
Biography:
Thomas Montgomery Newman is youngest son of Alfred Newman (making him the brother of David, the cousin of Randy and the nephew of Lionel and Emil). After graduating from Yale University and spending time writing for off-Broadway productions, theatre, and pop bands such as The Innocents and Tokyo 77, Newman entered the movie world in 1984 with his score for the movie "Reckless". Since then, Newman has become one of film music's true original voices: with regular collaborators Bill Bernstein, Thomas Pasatieri, George Doering, Chas Smith and others, Newman often utilizes numerous unusual and rare instruments alongside a standard symphony orchestra to create an enigmatic and highly unique sound that is both lush and pastoral, but infused with the rhythms and textures of world music; his Oscar-nominated score for "American Beauty" (1999) has become one of the most-widely copied scores in recent years, and has proven to be a musical inspiration to many seeking to musically encompass modern American suburbia. Among his more high-profile credits are films such as "The Lost Boys" (1987), "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café" (1991), "Scent of a Woman" (1992), "Little Women" (1994), "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "Unstrung Heroes" (1995), "Up Close and Personal" (1996), "Phenomenon" (1996), "The Horse Whisperer" (1998), "The Green Mile" (1999), "Erin Brockovich" (2000), "Road to Perdition" (2002), "Finding Nemo" (2003), “Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events” (2004), and the multi award-winning TV series "Angels in America" (2003). He is an eight-time Oscar-nominee, and was awarded an Emmy for his title music to the hit TV series "Six Feet Under" in 2001. Newman lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children.
