TRUE ROMANCE
Rating:

Original Review: This isn't music composed and conducted by Hans Zimmer - it's music composed and conducted by some guy on a beach in Jamaica! Either that, or the German maestro has gone completely off his rocker and decided to write a whole load of calypso music for a Quentin Tarantino-style road movie. Whatever the answer, True Romance is great fun. Sadly, only three cues of Zimmer's score made it on to the soundtrack album, and they are all quite short as well. All three tracks - 'You're So Cool', 'Stars at Dawn' and 'Amid The Chaos of the Day' - are combinations of light, playful marimba melodies (reminiscent of the British Sanatogen TV advert) which, in a way, are a little like James Horner's 'The Orphanage' cue from Where The River Runs Black insofar as they use contemporary synthesisers to portray simplistic instruments, and kickin' rock tracks replete with drum solos and cool guitar riffs. It's a long, long way from being a typical Zimmer score, but it certainly highlights the versatility of the man in the way he can compose music in a wide variety of styles. Like I said, it's just a shame that there isn't more of the score in the album: the rest of the CD is made up of consumer-oriented pop and rock tracks from the likes of John Waite, Charles and Eddie, Chris Isaak and Robert Palmer (although the latter's rendition of the classic Cahn/Van Heusen ballad is actually rather good).
