Stephen Warbeck Stephen Warbeck

Born: 1953, Southampton, England.

Biography:
English composer Stephen Warbeck began studying piano and composition at the age of four. His parents were keen amateur musicians who encouraged Stephen to pursue his musical talents. By his mid-teens, Stephen developed an affinity for rock 'n' roll, as well as acting. He studied drama and French at Bristol University, and began his career as a thespian, but eventually diversified into writing music, although his interest and love of the theatre remained. Warbeck began writing music for film and television in the early 1990s, and over the past decade has gradually built up a considerable filmography. He has written music for more than forty television projects, and has received five BAFTA nominations, including one for the highly successful series "Prime Suspect" (1990-1996). Warbeck's list of feature films included "Mrs. Brown" (1997), "Mystery Men" (1999), "Quills" (2000), "Billy Elliot" (2000), "Captain Corellis's Mandolin" (2001), "Birthday Girl" (2002), and of course "Shakespeare In Love" (1998), which won Warbeck an unexpected Academy Award. Warbeck maintains his links with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and now holds the position of Head of Music and Associate Artist at the RSC. Some of his notable stage productions include the National Theatre's "An Inspector Calls", John Madden's production of "Proof” and Sam Mendes's production of "To The Green Fields Beyond" both at the Donmar, "The Triumph Of Love" at the Almeida and "The White Devil" by the Royal Shakespeare Company. In addition to composing for film and television, Warbeck has written music for numerous radio plays, and is a founder member of the anarchic pub band The Kippers, for whom he also composes, and performs.
