Debbie Wiseman Debbie Wiseman

Born: 10 May 1963, London, England.

Biography:
English composer Debbie Wiseman studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Buxton Orr, and began composing scores for television during the late 1980s. A pioneer of female composers working in film and television, Wiseman's musical output has included over 100 scores for television productions, including popular shows such as "The Good Guys", "People's Century", "The Upper Hand", "Children's Hospital" and "Vets In Practice", as well as acclaimed TV movies such as Peter Kosminsky's "Warriors", the BBC drama "Rebel Heart", "My Uncle Silas" "Othello", "The Project", “He Knew He Was Right” and the story of the life of the serial killer "Shipman". On the big screen, Wiseman's music has been widely acclaimed, with her scores for films such as "Tom & Viv" (1994), "Haunted" (1995), "Wilde" (1997), "Tom's Midnight Garden" (2000), "The Guilty" (2001), "Before You Go" (2002) and the spectacular “Arsène Lupin” (2004) receiving almost universal praise. Wiseman has won and been nominated for numerous awards, notably Best Original Score at the Royal Television Society Awards for "Warriors" in 2000, Best Original Theme Music for "Shrinks" in the 1991 Silents to Satellite Awards, a Royal Television Society Award nomination for "Death of Yugoslavia" in 1995, and an Ivor Novello Award nomination for "Wilde" in 1996. In addition to her film and TV work, Wiseman released an album of music inspired by two of Oscar Wilde's best loved texts, "The Nightingale and the Rose" and "The Selfish Giant", narrated by Stephen Fry and Vanessa Redgrave, which was nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for Children at the 2002 Grammy Awards (and which inspired a Channel 4 series of animated films based on texts by Wilde with newly recorded Wiseman scores). She has also been a fairly regular face on British TV, presenting the Channel 4 series Backtracks, examining the role of music in film and television productions, and appearing as a regular panellist on the game show Call My Bluff. She was made an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for services to music in the 2004 New Year Queen’s Honours list.
