Gabriel Yared
Born: 7 October 1949, Beirut, Lebanon.
Biography:
Born in Lebanon, composer Gabriel Yared spent most of his early working career in France. Originally forced by his parents on a career as a lawyer, Yared became involved in music in the early 1970s; he moved firstly to Brazil, then to Paris, where he worked as a songwriter and orchestrator for Johnny Halliday and Charles Aznavour, amongst others. He began his film scoring career in the late 1970s, receiving critical acclaim for his work on Jean-Luc Godard's "Every Man for Himself", and soon became one of the most respected composers working in French cinema, with films such as the Oscar winning "Dangerous Moves" (1984), "Flagrant Desire" (1985), the controversial "Betty Blue" (1986) and the classic "Camille Claudel" (1988) to his name. Yared began to score movies outside of Europe in the mid-1980s, and since then has amassed an impressive list of successful credits, including "Clean and Sober" (1988), "The Lover" (1991), "Wings of Courage" (1995), "City of Angels" (1998), "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999), "Message in a Bottle" (1999), "Autumn in New York" (2000), "Possession" (2002) and "Cold Mountain" (2003). Yared won an Oscar in 1996 for his acclaimed score for the adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel "The English Patient", and is also the recipient of a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Césars. While continuing to compose music for the movies, he has also composed numerous ballets, including ""Clavigo", which premiered in November 1999 at the Paris Opera House. Yared is also the founder and director of the Pléiade Academy in Paris, which supports talented young composers from across Europe in the creation and promotion of their works.
